Outreach Sunday Celebrates New Neighbors
Alexandria, VA, April 14, 2013— Outreach Sunday at Historic Christ Church will celebrate 12 years of community engagement and service of the New Neighbors English Language Learners and Family Literacy Program. There will be a panel discussion Sunday, April 14, 2013, at 10:15 a.m. that includes founder Dr. Jean Johnson, current program director Marcia D’Arcangelo, Campagna Center board member Jay Beckhorn, several students, and volunteer teachers.   Started at Christ Church by Jean Johnson, who has since retired to Florida, and supported by a dedicated core of volunteers, New Neighbors serves the needs of immigrant families in the Alexandria area. It provides them with an easy and affordable way to learn English, to learn about American culture, and to increase interviewing skills. It does not just seek to educate adults, but also to teach English to the children in these families while offering child care during parents’ class time. Currently overseen by The Campagna Center, 50 percent of the volunteers are Christ Church parishioners. The New Neighbors program was listed in The Greater Washington Catalogue for Philanthropy as an effective “high impact, carefully evaluated” non-profit program.   Outreach ministries at Christ Church include a number of programs that provide assistance throughout Alexandria to those in need. Outreach Sunday, April 14, 2013, will celebrate these efforts. The loose plate offerings from all church services that day will benefit the New Neighbors English Learning and Family Literacy Program, an outreach activity hosted by Christ Church and operated by The Campagna Center.   For additional information or a photo, Contact: Tara Knox, Development Director, Historic Christ Church; Alexandria, VA, 703-549-1450, 703-549-5883 (fax), tknox@ccalex.org.       The parish home of George Washington and Robert E.
