Alexandria, VA, July 12, 2013 – Throughout the month of July, historic Christ Church in Old Town Alexandria will host Love Makes a Family, an exhibit of photographs and interviews of families with lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) members. A community tea reception for the exhibit will take place on Sunday, July 21, at 3:00 p.m. in the Meade Room. The public and press are invited and welcome to attend. “The theme behind the exhibit, and the reason for our hosting it,” said the Rev. Heather VanDeventer “is to show the love and caring in these families that reflect the spirit of inclusiveness and diversity here in our congregation.” The traveling display of museum-quality portraiture was produced by Family Diversity Projects, a non-profit organization that seeks to educate Americans of all ages about the full range of diversity, from people with disabilities to LGBT people and their families, through first-person accounts and positive images. The exhibit, with photographs by Gigi Kaeser and writing by Peggy Gillespie, is family-focused and appropriate for all ages. The twenty portraits on easels with accompanying narratives will be on display during July. The exhibit is available for viewing by the public in the Meade Room at Christ Church from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sundays and in the interior window ledges of the historic church from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and noon to 4:00 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays until July 28. Through members of its LGBT Inclusion Team, Christ Church partners with the People of Faith for Equality in Virginia, a growing interfaith network of rabbis, ministers, priests and lay people who seek to offer full welcome and inclusion to LGBT people and families in their congregations. The Unitarian Universalist (UU) Church of Arlington, Temple Rodef Shalom (Falls Church), Congregation Etz Hayim and Rock Spring Congregational United Church of Christ (both of Arlington), and the Unitarian Universalist Churches of Reston and Loudoun participated in sponsoring the exhibit opening and its showing at the Arlington Central Library during June.
