Alexandria, VA – Ten-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, Disco, is more than just a beloved family pet; he has been hard at work 5 days a week for most of his life. Disco, a certified pet therapy dog, adds a unique spin to high-quality patient care at DC Smiles in Alexandria, VA.
“My practice is unique in the advanced techniques I offer my patients all under one roof, but above all, I have pet therapy,” said Dr. Lawrence Singer, DMD, noting that Disco provides relaxation for patients. “For people who are nervous coming to the dentist, he takes the edge off,” said the doctor. “It’s a feature that makes coming to DC Smiles more enjoyable.”
Disco was certified by Fairfax Pets on Wheels, Inc. in Fairfax, VA. This program also allows him to visit with elderly nursing home residents in the Northern Virginia area. “Patients ask for Disco by name,” said the doctor’s wife, Tonya Singer. “If Disco misses a day of work, our patients check with us to make sure he’s ok, just like they would for any human member of our staff.”
It’s no secret that well-established dentists like Singer put in a lifetime of hard work to be successful in their field. In therapy dog, Disco’s case, it seems he has taken after his owner when it comes to work ethic. “Disco is the first one out the door in the mornings,” said Singer. “He’s also the first one to sleep at night,” admits the doctor. “I guess that’s proof of a hard day’s work!”
